AAT Professional Level is a Level 4 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It is equivalent to the first year of a degree. Academic and Professional qualifications are not exactly comparable. For employability, AAT Level 4 is preferable over a degree.
Level 4 does not earn UCAS points as it’s considered the same level qualification as the first year of a degree. Depending on the university, this may mean you can gain entry to the second year of the degree.
Level 4 on the regulated qualifications framework qualifies you as an AAT Accountant. When accompanied by accounting work-experience, you will qualify for full membership (MAAT designatory). It also provides exemptions from papers in CIMA, ACCA and ICAEW.
An AAT Licensed Accountant is qualified to sign off the accounts for companies up to the audit threshold, where a company does not have a turnover more than £15 million and its total asset value is not more than £7.5 million.
Typically, 97% of UK businesses fall under the UK audit threshold. The percentage is expected to increase with the threshold rise in 2025. This means, currently over five million UK businesses can trust AAT Accountants to service their accounting requirements.
Yes, completing AAT Level 4 makes you a qualified AAT Accountant and an Accounting Technician, recognised and preferred by UK and worldwide employers. Whilst it is not a chartered accountant status (CIMA, ACCA, ACA), MAAT is widely respected and will open the door to most senior level positions.
To gain MAAT status, you are required to have 1 years work experience or complete the MAAT CPD pathway.
Typical services that can be offered by a self-employed AAT Licensed Accountant include:
The average salary for an MAAT qualified accountant is dependent on the level and volume of work experience. The table below shows typical 2026 salaries aggregated by a leading UK recruitment agency. The salary ranges are UK wide averages.
