AAT Accounting Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AAT Level 3 and Level 4 training?

During AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting you build intermediate financial and management accounting skills. At AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, you move into advanced management accounting practices, including interpreting and analysing financial statements, management accounting, taxation and setting internal controls.

What is Level 3 AAT equivalent to?

AAT Level 3 is equivalent to A-Levels (grades A–E) in England and SCQF Level 7 in Scotland. It prepares you for technician-level roles within accounting and finance.

Is AAT Level 4 a qualified Accountant?

Yes. Completing AAT Level 4 qualifies you as an AAT Accountant and professional member status (MAAT). You can apply for full membership to use the MAAT letters after your name and, if you wish, become a Member in Practice to open your own accountancy practice.

Is AAT better than a degree?

AAT is preferred over a degree by employers. Whilst AAT is slightly below degree level, the extensive hands-on work-based skills learnt within AAT, means it is the industry's leading accounting qualification ahead of both degrees and chartered accountancy.

Can I go straight to AAT Level 4?

You can only move straight to AAT Level 4 if you already hold a full accountancy degree or have many years accounting experience at all levels including management. There are no shortcuts to becoming an accountant. The knowledge required for a successful accountancy career builds into one overall picture of understanding that is built at level 2, level 3 and level 4.

What is the hardest AAT Level 4 exam?

All exams are of an equal level. When students say one exam is harder than another, it just means that they preferred the subject matter of one exam over another, which often makes it feel easier or harder if they don't like a subject.
